State news agency reported that the markings were found on an uncovered rock surface in Huanghua town and are believed to be the footprints of dinosaurs including Tyrannosaurus, Coelurosaurs and Hadrosaurs.

Experts are speculating whether the prints represent a migration or a panicked escape.

The footprints, which range between 10 centimetres to 80 centimetres in length, date back to the mid-Cretaceous period, making them more than 100 million years old.

The 2,600-square-metre rock surface where the prints were found lies close to Zhucheng, home to more than 30 dinosaur fossil sites.

Archeologists say excavation work will continue on the rock slope.
